Addressing Issues of Difference in Our Communities

Sarah Hershey

Sarah Hershey is a talented middle school humanities educator, with experience in both public and private school settings, and certification in California, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. She is particularly adept at creating safe, respectful environments in which people can have meaningful dialogue and think deeply about challenging, complex issues. Her energy and enthusiasm drive her to constantly seek new ways of making learning interactive and relevant.

Sarah's commitment to promoting equity in schools is demonstrated by her M.Ed. in Social Justice Education and her involvement in diversity work on both local and national levels. Her work with the Bay Area chapter of People of Color in Independent Schools (POCIS) and the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) has focused on developing and co-facilitating sessions for white high school students and adults to explore issues related to racism. She is also an active member of NAIS's diversity think tank, Call to Action.

In addition to incorporating principles and issues of diversity, equity, and social justice into her own curriculum and practice, Sarah has designed and facilitated workshops for educators and undergraduate students. She has consulted on: developing social justice and community service learning curriculum; beginning and sustaining school-wide initiatives to celebrate diverse families, particularly lesbian- and gay-parented families; meeting the needs of multiracial/ethnic students; building cross-cultural bridges; creating new diversity- and inclusion-related administrative positions; and guiding other areas of systemic change.
