Addressing Issues of Difference in Our Communities

Sergio Oppenheimer

A Black gay male born in San Juan, Puerto and raised working class in Hartford Connecticut, Sergio Yomar Oppenheimer understands first hand the complexities of intersecting identities. Sergio has organized, coordinated and facilitated numerous groups small and large around diversity, cultural competency and exploring intersections of identity. In all his work he continues to cultivate a passion for empowering individuals through communication and education.

Sergio currently works with Alameda County Social Services Agency as a Child Welfare Worker. While working on his MSW at San Jose State University, he designed and implemented a study to address how BASW and MSW students rated the effectiveness of the newly implemented transcultural model for San José State University School of Social Work. Through these experiences he has engaged and educated individuals from diverse socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.

As a life learner, Sergio presents a creative, investigative and analysis of complex situations. His intent is to assist in recognizing holistic solutions believing that this will create action at multiple levels, starting with the self and ultimately affecting the community and organizational levels.
